Making Baltimore Safer

We were exceptionally busy during our first year, transitioning to a community prosecution model, establishing a major investigations unit, and expanding alternative-to-prison programs, just to name a few of our early initiatives.

More importantly, our efforts and our partnerships with police and the public are producing positive results. For example, we produced a conviction rate of 71 percent in homicide cases during our first year, up from 64 percent in 2010.

We also secured longer prison sentences for defendants convicted of violent crimes involving guns. The average sentence in such cases last year was 118.1 months, up from 108.1 months in 2010.

We have much more work to do to make all of Baltimore's neighborhoods safer, but as these numbers reveal, we are making significant progress.
