Former Attorney Robert Kline III and Paralegal Karen Cain

Plead Guilty to Perjury

Perjury Discovered After Paralegal Testifies Falsely in Civil Case

Baltimore, MD – April 9, 2008 – Today before Baltimore City Circuit Court

Judge Timothy Doory, Robert L. Kline III of 3000 block of Caves Road, Owings Mills and Karen A. Cain of  1900 Fluse Drive, Marriotsville pleaded guilty to charges of perjury.

Their pleas were supported by the following statement of facts presented to the court:  Robert Kline was a practicing attorney and Karen A Cain was his paralegal.  On August 7, 2006, Kline appeared in Baltimore City district court for a civil trial.  At that time, he had his employee, Karen Cain testify under oath that she was the credit manager of a company he was representing.  Cain was the only witness in his entire case.

At a later point in time, the perjury was discovered, and Kline was referred to the Attorney Grievance Commission.  He was subsequently disbarred on September 20, 2007.  The case was then referred to the State’s Attorney’s Office.  An investigation was conducted and the defendants were indicted by a Baltimore City Grand Jury on January 4, 2008.  On April 9, 2008, Kline and Cain pled guilty to perjury.  Kline received a sentence of 3-years suspended with 2-years probation and 500 hours of community service.  Cain received 18 months suspended with one year probation and 100 hours of community service.

Tracy Varda of the Economics Crime Division prosecuted this case.
