State's Attorney Bernstein

Gregg L. Bernstein is a life-long resident of Baltimore. He attended public school, and is a graduate of the Universityof Maryland and the University of Maryland School of Law. While in law school, he was an editor of the Law Review.

After completing a clerkship with the Honorable Elsbeth Bothe in the Circuit Court of Baltimore City, Mr. Bernstein worked as an associate at the law firm of Melnicove, Kaufman, Weiner & Smouse - subsequently known as Melnicove, Kaufman, Weiner, Smouse & Garbis. In 1987, Mr. Bernstein joined the United States Attorney's Office as an Assistant United States Attorney. He remained a federal prosecutor until 1992.

Mr. Bernstein later worked at the Baltimore firm Miles & Stockbridge and then established his own firm, Martin, Junghans, Snyder & Bernstein. In 2004 he joined the Baltimore office of Zuckerman Spaeder LLP.

The prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers inducted Mr. Bernstein as a Fellow in recognition of his ability and accomplishments as a trial lawyer.

With nearly 30 years of trial experience and a determination to make Baltimore safer, Mr. Bernstein decided in the summer of 2010 to seek election as the city's top prosecutor. He prevailed and was sworn as the 19th State's Attorney in Baltimore City history in January 2011.

State's Attorney Bernstein's top priority is the prosecution of violent, repeat offenders. Research reveals that violent, repeat offenders have a disproportionally large and lethal impact on Baltimore and cities across the nation. To fulfill his goal in this area, State's Attorney Bernstein formulated a Major Investigations Unit, a division dedicated exclusively to the pursuit and prosecution of violent, repeat offenders.

State's Attorney Bernstein is in the process of converting his office to a community prosecution model, which has proven highly successful in other U.S. cities such as Brooklyn, N.Y. By assigning prosecutors to communities rather than to types of crime, the Office of the State's Attorney will forge closer, more productive relationships with citizens and produce better outcomes.
