2.8.11: Perry Convicted a Second Time for Double Homicide
February 8, 2011 -- A Baltimore City Circuit Court jury convicted Kenneth D. Perry today of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and handgun violations for murdering LaShawn Jordan an dKelly bunn in July 1998.
Scheduled for sentecing on April 1, 2011, Perry faces a maximum of life without parole plus 50 years in prison.
Perry, 45, was convicted int eh same case a decade ago and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A later investigation by the State's Attorney's Office during a post-conviction proceeding revealed that the origional prosecutor had failed to disclose exculpatory evidence to the defense. The State's Attorney's Office made the required disclosure, and a new trial was granted.
Ms. Jordan's four-year-old daughter was present at the time fo the double homicide. She testified in both trials, first at the age of seven, most recently at the age of 17.
"This young woman demonstrated amazing fortitude throughout the process. We are profoundly grateful to her, and we hope this conviction helps to bring some sense of closure for her and her family," State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said. "As a result of her testimony and the excellent work of the prosecutors, Lisa Phelps and Michael Leedy, a very dangerous violent offender will remain behind bars."
