7.27.11: Gaskins Sentenced to 54 Years for 2009 Shootings Near Hopkins Hospital

July 27, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Paul A. Smith sentenced Timothy Gaskins, age 44, today to 54 years in prison for shooting at a man near Johns Hopkins Hospital and hitting a bystander in the process.

In September 2009, Gaskins exited a black Honda Accord parked in the 1600 block of E. Madison Street, aimed a .38 caliber handgun at a male individual, and fired five shots. One bullet pierced the intended victim's trousers but missed his leg. Another bullet struck a second female victim in the hand as she was walking to her car after at day at work at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

When police went to the home of the registered owner of the Honda Accord, they observed Gaskins parking the vehicle in a nearby parking lot and arrested him.

After a six-day trial in May 2011, a jury convicted Gaskins of two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first- and second-degree assault, and 16 other counts.

During the sentencing hearing today, the unintended shooting victim delivered an oral impact statement.

Assistant State's Attorney Kelly Madigan prosecuted the case.
