4.8.11: Boyd Convicted for Attack on 11-Year-Old Girl in Park

April 8, 2011 -- A Baltimore City Circuit Court jury convicted Walter Boyd, 28, today of first-degree assault for attacking an 11-year-old girl in Druid Hill Park after she refused his attempt to kiss her.

On September 6, 2009, Boyd attended a cookout at the victim's home. During the party, he left the home with the girl and led her by the hand to nearby Druid Hill Park, where he attempted to kiss her, according to court testimony. When she rejected his advance, Boyd strangled her until she lost consciousness and then discarded her in the low-slug branch of a tree.

When she regained consciousness, the girl walked home. Her family discovered her injuries the next morning, and she immediately identified Boyd, a man the family knew by the nickname "Wookie," as her attacker.

The girl suffered "massive" bruising of the neck, chest, and mouth, according to Dr. Allen Walker, the doctor who treated her at Johns Hopkins Hospital and testified during the three-day trial.

Scheduled for sentencing on June 1, 2011, Boyd faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. He also faces as many as nine additional years for violating the terms of his probation resulting from a conviction for armed robbery in Baltimore County.

Assistant State's Attorneys Ernest M. Reitz and Julie Drake prosecuted the case.
