2.2.11: Meighan Sentenced in Auto Case that Claimed Hopkins Student
February 2, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Timothy J. Doory sentenced Thomas Meighan of Howard County today to a 13-year prison sentence, a nine-year suspended sentence, and five years of probation for 10 charges, including the vehicular manslaughter that claimed the life of a Johns Hopkins University student in October 2009.
Meighan pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter, hit and run resulting in death, driving with a suspended license, and violating the interlock restriction on his driver's license for striking and killing Miriam Frankl as she was walking in the 3500 block of St. Paul Street on October 16, 2009.
He also pled guilty to driving under the influence, negligent driving, felony hit and run resulting in serous bodily injury, violating his interlock restriction, and driving without insurance for a July 2009 incident.
"Unfortunately, no prison sentence will bring this yougn woman back to the people who love her -- and there are many people who love her dearly, as we saw during the course of these proceedigns," State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said. "But we hope that the sentence imposed today brings closure to Ms. Frankl's family and serves as a reminder to everyone of the horrible consequences that can result when people drive under the influence of alcohol."
