9.16.11: Jeffries Convicted for Attempting to Kill Two Men During Robbery

September 16, 2011 -- A Baltimore City Circuit Court jury convicted Justin Jeffries this week of two counts of attempted murder and other charges for shooting two men as he tried to rob them with the help of a female accomplice.

On the evening of June 19, 2009, Dwayne Kelly and Lionel Robinson drove to a grocery store at the corner of Northern Parkway and Loch Raven Boulevard to meet Kelly K. Cedeno. When the two arrived, Cedeno asked them to follow her to another location, the 1000 bock of Dartmouth Glen Way. Once there, Kelly exited the passenger door of the car, a BMW M6 driven by Robinson, to talk to Cedeno, who was speaking with someone else on her cell phone. Moments later, Kelly got back into the car with Robinson.

While sitting in the vehicle, Kelly and Robinson were approached by a man wielding a gun. The man, Justin Jeffries, ordered them to "kick it out," meaning he was robbing them. Kelly attempted to flee, prompting Jeffries to fire multiple shots at him, striking him once. Jeffries then turned the gun on Kelly, shooting him in the face, chest, and shoulder. Both shooting victims fled, asked a pedestrian for help, and were separately transported to Sinai Hospital for treatment.

Cedeno, 24, pled guilty in May 2011 to conspiracy to commit robbery with a deadly weapon and the use of a handgun in a crime of violence. She faces a sentence of 20 years in prison, 15 of them suspended, followed by three years of probation. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 26, 2011.

Jeffries, 23, was found guilty on September 13, 2011, of two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery with a deadly weapon, and other charges. Scheduled for sentencing on November 15, 2011, he faces a maximum of 239 years in prison.

Assistant State's Attorney Angela Worthy prosecuted the case.
