1.21.11: Second Man Charged in Northwest Assault

January 21, 2011 -- Baltimore City State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein announced today that a second individual has been charged in connection with the November 19, 2010, assault of a juvenile in the Northwestern District.

Avi Werdesheim, 20, has been charged with second-degree assault, false imprisonment, and possession of a deadly weapon in a Criminal Information filed yesterday in Baltimore city Circuit Court. Mr. Werdesheim's brother, Eliyalu, is charged with identical offenses.

Both men are scheduled for arraignment on February 16, 2011. Each faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for second-degree assault and another three years for possession of a deadly weapon. False imprisonment is a common law offense, which permits the court to impose any sentence not considered cruel and unusual punishment.
