5.20.11: Two Men Receive Life Sentences for Shooting an Off-Duty Detective

May 20, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuity Court Judge Wanda K. Heard sentenced Craig Tillett and Kevon Williams today to life in prison, with all but 30 years suspended, for shooting an off-duty detective during an attempted robbery.

On the night of September 25, 2009, Tillett and Wilson, who were both juveniles at the time, held up a man at gunpoint to rob him. During the robbery, the assailants discovered that their victime was armed, at which time Wilson opened fire, striking the detective several times. The detective managed to draw his service weapon, return fire, and shoot Tillett in the leg. The detective later identified Tillett and Wilson as his attackers, and the defendants' DNA was recovered from bicycles left at the scene.

Tillett, 18, and Wilson, 18, both pled guilty to attempted first-degree murder and committing a crim of violence with a handgun. the handgun charge mandates that the first five years of their sentence must be served without the possibility of parole.

Assistant State's Attorneys Julie Glass and Jason Knight prosecuted the case.
