7.27.11: James Sentenced to 10 Years for Killing Police Detective

July 27, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry G. Williams sentenced Siam James today to 10 years in prison for killing Baltimore City Police Department Detective Brian Stevenson during a dispute over a parking spot in Canton on October 16, 2010.

A Baltimore jury convicted James of manslaughter on April 11, 2011, for the fatal attack. Ten years is the maximum allowable sentence for manslaughter.

"This was a tragic event, and one that has caused tremendous pain for all involved, particularly for Detective Stevenson's family, as evidenced by their moving and emotional testimony at today's sentencing hearing. We hope that this sentence helps to bring some sense of closure to all of Detective Stevenson's loved ones, as well as his colleagues in law enforcement," State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said.

Assistant State's Attorney Charles Blomquist prosecuted the case.
