11.16.11: Morgan Sentenced for Shooting Driver of Car that Had Just Come to a Stop

November 16, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams sentenced Marvell Morgan today to 18 years in prison for approaching a vehicle that had just come to a stop and shooting the driver in the chest.

On February 2, 2011, Morgan walked up to a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix that had just come to a stop in the 2000 block of Wilkens Avenue and fired three shots, hitting the driver, Dante Lee Dunston, one time. Dunston's girlfriend also was in the car, but she was not struck. Dunston immediately drove himself to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was treated for his injury.

In addition to witness identification, officers discovered a loaded .38 Special revolver at Morgan's home. Morgan admitted to ownership of the weapon but denied any participation in the shooting. However, a ballistic analysis confirmed that the gun in Morgan's possession was the gun used to shoot the victim.

Morgan, 22, pled guilty to attempted second-degree murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence.

Assistant State's Attorney Andrew Kowalczyk prosecuted the case.
