6.13.11: Salim Sentenced to 20 Years for Armed Carjacking

June 13, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Edward R.K. Hargadon sentenced Akeem Salim today to 20 years in prison for the 2009 armed carjacking of a man who had pulled to the side of the road to enter an address into his GPS.

Shortly after pulling over near the intersection of North Rosedale Street and Edmonson Avenue in November 2009 to input information into his GPS, Gary Lee found himself blocked in by a blue minivan. Three men emerged from the van, one armed with a shotgun, another with a handgun, and demanded Mr. Lee's vehicle and money. Mr. Lee relinquished the $40 in his pocket as well as his car to the man with the handgun, who jumped in and sped off. The vehicle was discovered abandoned roughly 30 minutes later.

While processing the car for evidence, the Baltimore Police Department lifted a fingerprint belonging to Salim. The defendant also was identified in a photographic array.

A jury convicted Salim in January of armed carjacking, first-degree assault, use of a handgun during a felony, and other charges.

Assistant State's Attorney Kurt E. Nachtman prosecuted the case.
