6.28.11: Kelly Sentenced to 25 Years for Shooting Next-Door Neighbor and Second Man
June 28, 2011 -- Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge M. Brooke Murdock sentenced Davon Kelly today to 25 years in prison for shooting his long-time next-door neighbor and another man during a morning attack in the spring of 2010.
Just after 8 a.m. on April 30, 2010, Phillip Henderson and Darrell Bolling were walking to Henderson's parked vehicle in teh 1300 block of Stockton Street in order to drive to work when Kelly approached them. With what he later described as a "black, rusty" .38 caliber handgun, Kelly shot both men, Henderson in the neck and left should, Bolling in the right arm. Both victims fled on foot and were ultimately treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Kelly, meanwhile, ran back to his nearby house before jumping into Henderson's car and driving away.
Henderson and Kelly were next-door neighbors in West Baltimore's Sandtown-Wichester community for 14 years before the incident.
Taken into custody four days later, Kelly confessed to shooting both victims, explaining that he shot Henderson at a distance of only three to four feet away. Kelly, who turns 40 next month, pled guilty to two counts of second-degree attempted murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence.
Assistant State's Attorney Angela Worthy prosecuted the case.
