The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City is seeking a full-time Assistant State’s Attorney for the Charging Division located at the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center, 300 E. Madison, Baltimore, MD 21202. The Charging Division operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year, including holidays and weekends.
The Charging Assistant State’s Attorney position requires a 12 hour rotational shift schedule which includes week days, week nights, weekends and holidays. Currently, the position is remote.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Review and assess probable cause statements and statements of charges submitted by police officers for legal sufficiency and case viability; determine appropriate charges; review witness lists; and prepare written bail reviews recommendations;
- Communicate with police officers and police liaisons to obtain supplements to statements of probable cause and statement of charges;
- Work with police liaison and correctional officers in charging and processing casework;
- Determine appropriate charging and jurisdiction for juvenile arrestees and facilitate processing of matters in the proper jurisdiction;
- Conduct bail reviews at the District Court;
- Assist the Court, State’s Attorney’s Office staff, BPD, Central Booking personnel, and others with the resolution of charging inquiries, as well as issues that may arise during the pretrial stage of a criminal case;
- Other duties as directed or delegated.
Requirements:
- Graduated from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland;
- Prior experience prosecuting and/or defending criminal matters;
- Adept in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law and Procedure;
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Must work well with a variety of individuals and be able to resolve issues professionally.
- The ability to work virtually when necessary, encompassing home internet access with speed, storage and equipment to access databases and process work as required;
- The ability to work effectively overnight;
- Responsibilities may require access and entry into a secure facility, therefore the successful candidate must be willing to submit to a TSA type search and frisk with each entry of the building;
- The successful candidate is considered Essential Personnel and must be available to work during snow and other city and state emergencies.
Salary: Starting salary is $77,191+ (commensurate with experience.)
