The Office of the State’s Attorney is seeking a highly skilled and experienced attorney to serve as the Deputy Division Chief in the Misdemeanor Jury Trial Division (MJT). The MJT Division prosecutes all misdemeanor cases prayed or appealed from District Court, as well as complex and high-profile misdemeanors and traffic matters. The division also functions as a critical training hub for 8-12 junior Circuit Court prosecutors developing jury-trial litigation skills.
This leadership role requires strong trial expertise, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to effectively guide attorneys through high-volume, fast-paced caseloads.
RESPONSIBILITES:
- Supervise and advise attorneys in the investigation, preparation, and prosecution of cases in the MJT Division;
- Train prosecutors on criminal law, trial practice and prosecution strategy;
- Second-seat new attorneys during hearings, bench trials, and jury trials;
- Handle high profile and complex matters assigned to the division, including homicides and major felony matters when appropriate;
- Provide second-chair opportunities and guidance to MJT attorneys;
- Develop, organize, and manage the court docket schedule to ensure efficient case flow and timely proceedings;
- Collect and maintain Division data;
- Interface and troubleshoot as necessary with other agencies and individuals, including judges, defense counsel, law enforcement, victims/witnesses, and court personnel;
- Attend assigned inter‑agency collaborations, multidisciplinary workgroups, and community‑based forums on behalf of the Office; provide updates and relay relevant information to the Division Chief and executive leadership;
- Serve as a professional liaison between the Office and partner agencies, community organizations, and government entities to strengthen relationships, address concerns, and support coordinated criminal justice efforts;
- Assist the Division Chief in the overall management of the Division;
- Perform additional duties as assigned or delegated.
REQUIREMENTS:
- D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in Maryland;
- Significant felony trial experience;
- Strong understanding of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure;
- Excellent legal analysis, decision‑making abilities, and professional judgment;
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong leadership, supervisory, and training abilities;
- Demonstrated time-management, organizational and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and resolve issues professionally.
- Ability to effectively manage and support attorneys with demanding Circuit Court caseloads.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume prosecutorial environment.
