The Circuit Court Mental Health Court (CCMHC) is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Assistant State’s Attorney (ASA) to join its specialized problem‑solving court team. CCMHC addresses the complex challenges presented by defendants living with mental illness and operates with a multidisciplinary group that includes the presiding Judge, ASA, Assistant Public Defender (APD), Court Clinician, Probation Agents, and a Court Coordinator.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring public safety while supporting initiatives that prioritize treatment, accountability, and long‑term stability for justice‑involved individuals with mental health needs.
RESPONSIBILITES
- Represent the State in the CCMHC probation docket;
- Monitor and litigate competency matters;
- Handle Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) pleas and assist in NCR trials;
- Represent the State in hospital releases hearings through the Office of Administrative Hearings or by jury trials;
- Support other ASAs and staff on mental‑health‑related legal and procedural issues;
- Provide updates and communication to victims;
- Meet and collaborate with Maryland Department of Health clinicians, including doctors, psychologists, and social workers;
- Participate in legislative matters related to mental health and justice‑system policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in Maryland;
- Significant felony trial experience;
- Adept in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law and Procedure;
- Strong legal analysis, decision‑making ability, and professional judgment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong motivational, interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management skills
- Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and resolve issues professionally.
- Excellent communication and collaboration in multidisciplinary settings
- Commitment to restorative justice and problem-solving court principles
- Prior MHC or problem-solving court experience preferred
Applicant is required to pass a criminal background investigation, which includes fingerprinting.
Compensation: Starting salary is $81,097-$129,584 commensurate with experience. Compensation also includes competitive benefits package.
