The Juvenile Division is responsible for handling cases that involve people under the age of 18 who are charged with a criminal matter. The Division works closely with the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS), the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), and the public to ensure that juvenile offenders are held accountable for their actions, and are provided rehabilitative measures to prevent future criminal behaviors.
The Charging ASA reviews probable cause statements and statements of charges submitted by police officers for legal sufficiency and case viability; determines appropriate charges; and prepares charging documents for petitioning in Juvenile Court. The position requires a 12 hour rotational shift schedule which includes week day, week nights, weekends, and holidays. Currently, the position is a hybrid between in-person and remote.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Determine appropriate charging and jurisdiction for juvenile arrestees and facilitate processing of matters in the proper jurisdiction;
- Prepare charging documents using the Juvenile Judicial Dialogue (JJD) program in the Juvenile Division of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, often in a limited time-frame setting;
- Communicate with police officers and police liaisons to obtain supplements to statements of probable cause and statement of charges;
- Communicate with victims, witnesses, police officers and DJS to assess cases and assist in processing casework;
- Conduct emergency arraignment hearings in Juvenile Court;
- Assist the Court, State’s Attorney’s Office, DJS, BPD, Juvenile Booking personnel, and others with the resolution of charging inquiries, as well as issues that may arise during the processing of a juvenile delinquency case;
- Other duties as directed or delegated.
Requirements:
- Graduated from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland;
- Prior experience prosecuting and/or defending criminal matters;
- Adept in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law and Procedure;
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Must work well with a variety of individuals and be able to resolve issues professionally.
- The ability to work virtually when necessary, encompassing home internet access with speed, storage and equipment to access databases and process work as required;
The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal background check before starting employment.
Salary: The salary is $74,943- $119,750 commensurate with experience, in addition to a competitive benefits.
