Position description
The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief State’s Attorney – Hargrove District Courthouse Building Chief, located at 700 E. Patapsco Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21225.
The District Court Division operates across four locations and is responsible for all misdemeanor criminal matters and traffic offenses carrying potential incarceration, including DUI, hit and run, fleeing and eluding, and licensing violations. The Division also oversees three problem‑solving courts and several specialty dockets. With approximately 60 staff members, the Division serves as the entry point for new prosecutors and places significant emphasis on training, mentorship, and professional development.

Responsibilities
Position Overview
The Hargrove Building Chief oversees daily operations at the Hargrove District Courthouse, which houses a criminal docket, two criminal traffic courts, and a Mental Health Court (MHC). The Chief supervises roughly twenty-one legal and non‑legal staff members and reports directly to the District Court Division Chief. This role plays a key part in training and supporting new attorneys, collaborating with other building chiefs and trainers, and ensuring strong operational management at one of the busiest sites for incarcerable traffic cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Preliminary Hearing Docket
- Litigate complex and high-profile District Court matters;
- Respond to Motions to Recall Warrants and other motions requiring State input;
- Prosecute complex DUI cases, including those involving serious bodily injury or death;
- Handle District Court dockets, criminal and traffic;
- Serve as the primary point of contact for numerous law enforcement agencies;
- Assist with the training and development of new attorneys;
- Observe daily court proceedings and meet with judges, members of the Bar, and the public as needed;
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position requirements
Qualifications
- D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in Maryland;
- Strong background in District Court practices and substantial trial experience;
- Demonstrated interest in traffic-related matters;
- Proficiency in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law and Procedure;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong motivational, interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management abilities;
- Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and resolve issues professionally.
Applicant is required to pass a criminal background investigation, which includes fingerprinting.
Benefits package
Compensation: Starting salary is $98,359.00 - $157,302.00, commensurate with experience. Includes a competitive benefits package.
