The Homicide Division of the BCSAO follows a vertical prosecution model. Prosecutors are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven day a week. In the event of a homicide, a prosecutor is immediately assigned to the case and will contact the detective to make himself or herself available to interview witnesses, provide legal guidance and, if necessary, travel to the crime scene.
Victim advocacy is a central component of the Division. The victim advocates immediately contact families in order to offer bereavement services and provide the contact information of the assigned prosecutor. Throughout every stage of a case, families are offered meetings and case updates with the advocate and prosecutor. The advocacy component of the Division ensures not only an open dialog, but respectful and compassionate treatment.
In addition to prosecuting all homicide cases, the Division handles all vehicular homicide investigations, as well as all collateral matters such as post-conviction proceedings and sentencing modification requests.
Each and every member of the Homicide Division is dedicated to the pursuit of justice for victims and their families.
