Misdemeanor Jury Trial Unit

The Misdemeanor Jury Trial Unit (MJT) is tasked with prosecuting cases that originate from the District Court where Defendants requested or “prayed” a jury trial.  In Maryland, Defendants have the right to a jury trial when the offense charged has a penalty greater than 90 days of incarceration.  MJT also handles certain handgun offenses and appeals from the District Court.

The MJT team attempts to strike a balance between punishment and alternatives to prosecution, with pursuits ranging from effecting justice on behalf of victims by seeking incarceration and probation to providing drug and mental health treatment and diversionary options.  Mediation is also recommended for eligible cases.
