Alonzo Smith was given a 20-year sentence for carjacking, robbery, and related charges

Baltimore, MD (February 9, 2024) - This week, Alonzo Smith was sentenced to 20 years of incarceration, above the 10 to 15-year guidelines, for a carjacking that occurred on February 5, 2023, at the 200 block of S. High Street. Smith was convicted on October 26, 2023, by a Baltimore City jury. Assistant State’s Attorney Noor Amin prosecuted this case.

“When we see a defendant repeatedly come through the criminal justice system for victim-based offenses, it is clear that they have no regard for the consequences of their actions or desire to change their behavior,” said State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates. “I applaud ASA Amin for skillfully prosecuting this case and securing a lengthy sentence that is very much deserved for this repeat offender.”

On February 05, 2023, a Baltimore Police officer responded to the 200 Block of S. High Street for a reported carjacking. The victim stated that his vehicle, a 2022 Honda CRV, had been taken during the course of an assault a few minutes before the officer arrived. The victim parked his vehicle shortly before being approached by Alonzo Smith and another unknown male. Smith and his accomplice demanded the victim hand over the keys. At that point, the victim attempted to flee on foot when he was grabbed from behind and struck in the back of his head. The victim was screaming for help and fell to the ground, where he was struck repeatedly by the defendant and his accomplice. As a result, the victim suffered a fracture on the right side of his face.

The defendant stole two iPhones, the vehicle’s key, a polo hat, and the victim’s black slingback containing various cards. Witnesses who observed part of the incident advised they heard the victim screaming and saw him being assaulted by two suspects.

With the help of an Apple Airtag, which was inside the victim’s vehicle, investigators were able to view the location of the car at 1600 N. Bond Street. Officers responded and found the vehicle unoccupied. The defendant was walking away from where the vehicle was parked at a high rate of speed and was subsequently stopped for investigative purposes. It was determined that the defendant had an outstanding arrest warrant and was found to be in possession of the victim’s missing possessions.
