(May 17, 2024) - Yesterday, Arthur Jesse McCaden pled guilty to First Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime of Violence, Attempted Armed Robbery, and five counts of Armed Robbery for the fatal shooting of Fabian Sanchez Gonzalez that occurred on the 2500 block of Boston Street in April 2023. Homicide Division Chief Michael Dunty and Assistant State's Attorney Justin Greer prosecuted this case.

“Securing a plea for first-degree murder is a testament to our relentless pursuit of justice. This outcome underscores our unwavering commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and bringing closure to the victims' families,” said State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates. “This case highlights my administration’s focus on holding violent offenders accountable. I thank my Homicide Unit for their tireless efforts and unmatched dedication. This administration will continue to focus on the victims of crime in our city and ensure they receive some measure of justice.”

On Sunday, April 30, 2023, at approximately 4:24 p.m., Baltimore Police were dispatched to the T-Mobile store in the 2500 block of Boston Street for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they observed an adult male, later identified as Fabian Sanchez Gonzalez, seated in a chair, complaining of pain in his chest area, which was caused by a single gunshot wound. Medics transported Gonzalez to Bayview Hospital for treatment. On May 1, 2023, at approximately 4:49 p.m., despite all life-saving efforts, doctors pronounced Gonzalez deceased.

During the investigation, Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from inside the store. The footage showed two Black males entering the store, one dressed in an all-blue tracksuit and the other in a dark jacket and pants. One of the unknown Black males produces a firearm and demands money. During the robbery, Gonzalez was shot, and the suspects fled the location.

Investigators also put out “Attempt to Identify” flyers to all law enforcement agencies. On May 1, 2023, a Detective from the Baltimore County Robbery Unit identified the suspect in the blue tracksuit as Arthur Jesse McCaden. On May 3, 2023, an additional witness from the Department of Juvenile Services identified McCaden as the individual in the blue tracksuit on the “Attempt to Identify” flyer, which was created and disseminated by investigators.

The investigation also determined that McCaden robbed multiple other cell phone stores between April 18, 2023, and April 25, 2023, including 7 St. Paul Street, 3727 Eastern Avenue, and 1030 W. 41st Street. He pled guilty to four counts of Armed Robbery for his role in those cases. Sentencing is scheduled for October 16, 2024, and the defendant will get a sentence of life suspended all but up to 60 years.
