The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office becomes involved when police bring a case forward and criminal charges are being considered. At that point, the Office reviews the case, decides whether charges should move forward, and handles the case in criminal court.
After criminal charges are filed, a case may move through several stages. Not all cases follow the same path.
Criminal charges are reviewed and, if appropriate, formally filed by the State’s Attorney’s Office.
The case may involve court hearings, motions, or pre-trial proceedings.
The State's Attorney's Office may contact you about court dates or information needed.
Some cases are resolved before trial; others proceed to a full trial.

Impact Statements explain how a crime has affected you or your community.
Victims have the right to submit a Victim Impact Statement, and the State’s Attorney’s Office encourages them to do so. The statement explains how a crime has affected the victim, their family, or their lives. Submission is voluntary.
A Community Impact Statement allows individuals or organizations to explain how a crime has affected a neighborhood or broader community and may be considered by the court.
Your court notice, letter, or summons will list the courthouse where your case is scheduled. Always refer to your court paperwork to confirm the correct location. You can find courthouse locations, hours, and parking details on our Visit Our Offices page.
