The Baltimore prosecutor appeared on WBAL NewsRadio's "C4 and Bryan Nehman Show," during which, the topic came up because of what Maryland Juvenile Services Secretary Vincent Schiraldi told a House committee on Thursday. Schiraldi spoke to an audit of DJS, saying more than 70% of the juveniles who first come into the system are only in the system once, not repeatedly.
“Everybody says we love young people; we do love young people, but we got to hold them accountable,” Bates said. “That’s what I think parents are for and if they’re not going to do that then we are going to step in and hold young people accountable.”
Assadollah Hashemi, 66, of Reservoir Hill, pleaded guilty in Baltimore Circuit Court to setting a fire and damaging a religious building. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but will only serve the time he’s already spent in custody.
Ferguson congratulated some of the public officials present, from Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, for advocating for the additional partnership between the city’s liquor board and sheriff’s office.

The prosecution asked Judge Taylor for a sentence of life in prison, suspending all but 30 years. They argued the harsh sentence would serve as a “deterrent, a punishment and a message” to Evans.
Bates’ quiet toughness is the reason that Baltimore has enjoyed whatever downturn in homicides and other violent crimes has occurred despite Mayor Brandon Scott and his team taking credit, as the improvement correlates perfectly with Bates’ assumption of office and communication of his new seriousness in prosecuting crime.
