Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates is asking the city to fund its division that reviews body camera footage, which he says has played a key role in helping drive down the city’s crime rates. “There’s no more important division to the success of our office than the body-worn camera [division],” he said Wednesday at a city council budget hearing.

Nearly three years after being acquitted in the murder of Safe Streets worker Dante Barksdale, Garrick Powell appeared in federal court Monday. The 32-year-old accepted a plea deal from the U.S. government in an unrelated case, pleading guilty to one count of possession of a machine gun. The charge stemmed from Powell’s arrest back in April 2023, less than one year after a jury found him not guilty of Barksdale’s murder.
Toomer previously pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and firearm use in a violent crime on Nov. 13, 2024. He initially faced additional charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder and reckless endangerment, as well as related other firearm charges.
